US Secret Service eliminated a gunman who reportedly attempted to enter the White House armed with an assault rifle, causing one passerby to be shot. The suspect was removed to a nearby hospital where he died.

이 용의자는 평소 자신이 예수 그리스도라고 믿는 등 정신적 문제가 있는 인물인 것으로 알려졌다. 비밀경호국 발표에 따르면, 이 용의자는 백악관 서쪽 모퉁이 즉 17번가와 펜실베이니아 애비뉴가 만나는 교차로에서 접근해 총격을 가하기 시작했다. 이에 비밀경호국이 응사하는 과정에서 용의자가 총에 맞았고, 인근 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 사망했다. 지나가던 행인 1명도 총상을 입고 위중한 상태인 것으로 알려졌다.
비밀경호국 대변인은 예비조사 발표 때 “총격 사건 당시 지나가던 행인 1명도 총에 맞았으나, 용의자의 첫 총격 때 다친 것인지 이후 이어진 총격전 중에 다쳤는지는 아직 불분명하다”고 밝혔다. 경호 요원들은 아무도 다치지 않았다고 이 대변인은 설명했다. 정확한 공격 동기는 아직 확인되지 않았지만, 뉴욕포스트는 소식통을 인용해 용의자가 21살의 남성이며 자신이 예수 그리스도라고 믿는 등 정신적 문제가 있는 인물이라고 보도했다. 이 용의자는 과거 백악관 접근 금지 명령을 받는 등 비밀경호국에서도 인지하고 있는 인물인 것으로 알려졌다.
그는 백악관 앞에서 약 3발가량의 총을 발사한 뒤 비밀경호국의 집중 사격을 받아 제압됐다고 이 매체는 전했다. 앞서 시엔엔 기자들은 백악관 인근에서 수십 발의 총성을 들었고, 이로 인해 봉쇄 조처가 이뤄졌다고 전했다. 에이비시 뉴스의 셀리나 왕 백악관 선임특파원도 소셜미디어 엑스에 “백악관 노스론에서 아이폰으로 소셜미디어 영상을 찍던 중 총성을 들었다”고 밝혔다. 당시 백악관 북쪽 잔디밭에 있던 취재진은 모두 브리핑실 내부로 긴급히 대피했다.
백악관 인근에서 총격 사건이 벌어진 것은 지난 한달간 세 차례에 이른다. 지난 4일 백악관 인근 워싱턴 기념탑 남동쪽 교차로에서 총기를 소지한 용의자가 법집행 요원들을 향해 발포해 교전이 벌어진 바 있다. 지난달 25일 백악관 출입기자협회 만찬이 열린 힐튼호텔 보안 검색 구역에서 산탄총과 권총, 칼 등으로 무장한 괴한이 총을 쏘며 검색대를 돌진해 통과한 직후 당국에 제압됐다. 다른 지자체에 수도권 쓰레기 ‘원정 배출’ 땐, 처리비 더 물린다
