US President Donald Trump has pledged to send an additional 5000 troops to Poland as part of efforts to enhance NATO's defense capabilities. The announcement comes after Poland's President Andrzej Duda expressed gratitude and announced his commitment to strengthen Poland's partnership with the US.

카롤 나브로츠키 폴란드 대통령은 21일 밤 트럼프 대통령의 증파 방침 발표 직후 엑스를 통해 “미국 대통령께 감사드린다”며 “나는 폴란드와 미국의 동맹을 굳건히 지켜왔고 앞으로도 그럴 것”이라고 밝혔다. 이어 양국 관계에 대해 “모든 폴란드 국민과 유럽 전체의 안보를 떠받치는 핵심 버팀목”이라며 “훌륭한 동맹이란 협력과 상호 존중, 공동 안보에 대한 헌신에 기반하는 것”이라고 강조했다. 브와디스와프 코시니아크카미시 국방장관도 “폴란드와 미국의 관계가 몹시 견고하며 폴란드가 모범적이고 철통 같은 동맹국이라는 점을 확인했다”고 말했다.
마르크 뤼터 북대서양조약기구 사무총장은 22일 나토 외무장관 회의에 앞서 “당연히 환영한다”며 “우리가 가는 길은 더 강한 유럽과 나토를 향한다”고 밝혔다. 트럼프 대통령은 이날 자신의 소셜미디어에 “미국은 폴란드에 추가 병력 5000명을 보낼 것”이라며 자신이 지지하는 나브로츠키 대통령의 당선과 양측 관계를 고려했다고 적었다. 앞서 폴란드는 트럼프 대통령이 이달 초 독일 주둔 미군 5000명을 감축하겠다고 밝히자 해당 병력을 자국에 배치해달라고 요청했다.
다만 최근 폴란드로 이동 예정이던 순환 병력 4000명 파견 계획이 갑자기 취소되면서 폴란드 정부는 트럼프 행정부의 실제 의중을 주시해왔다. 현재 폴란드에는 미군 약 1만명이 주둔하고 있다. 이 가운데 상주 병력은 300~500명 수준이며 나머지는 6~9개월 단위로 교대하는 순환 병력이다. 미국이 폴란드 주둔 병력을 실제로 5000명 증원하겠다는 의미인지, 취소됐던 4000명 규모 순환 병력 배치를 재개하겠다는 뜻인지는 아직 명확하지 않은 상태다.
그럼에도 폴란드는 유럽 내 미군 재배치 과정에서 자국 병력이 늘어날 것이라는 기대를 드러내고 있다. 코시니아크카미시 장관은 “폴란드가 기존 약 1만명 병력을 잃지 않는다는 점은 확실하다”고 말했다. 마르친 프시다치 대통령실 외교보좌관은 “최소 1만1000명이 순환 배치될 것”이라며 트럼프 대통령의 ‘추가 병력’ 언급을 근거로 미국 측에 더 많은 병력 파견을 요구하겠다고 밝혔다. 폴란드는 ▶나토 동부전선 방어 역할 ▶나토 회원국 중 국내총생산 대비 높은 국방비 지출 ▶미국산 무기 대규모 구매 ▶미군 인프라 지원 등을 미군 증강의 근거로 내세우고 있다.

AFP=연합뉴스 특히 민족주의 우파 성향인 나브로츠키 대통령과 트럼프 대통령의 가까운 관계도 주요 배경으로 꼽힌다. 이번 미군 증파 발표는 폴란드가 주문한 F-35 라이트닝 II 전투기 인도와 맞물려 나왔다. 체자리 톰치크 국방차관은 트럼프 대통령 발표 직전 “폴란드 국기가 그려진 F-35 전투기들이 미국을 출발해 폴란드로 향하고 있다”며 “몇 시간 안에 세계에서 가장 현대적인 전투기를 보게 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
이번에 인도된 전투기는 폴란드가 2020년 약 46억 달러에 계약한 F-35 32대 가운데 1차 물량인 3대다. 나머지 29대는 2029년까지 순차적으로 인도될 예정이다. 한영혜 기자 han.younghye@joongang.co.kr
