People Power Party Representative Kim Tae-gyu delivers a five-minute speech during the 10th plenary session of the regular National Assembly on the 1st. ” The acts of Chun Doo-hwan that trampled the constitutional order resulted in a finalized Supreme Court ruling of life imprisonment on charges including insurrection, settling the historical judgment. Representative Kim’s denial of Chun Doo-hwan’s insurrection is as unacceptable as the insurrection itself, because it destroys the cohesion of our community.
On the 30th of last month, on the JTBC YouTube program ‘Genre Only Yeouido’, while discussing the film about the shooting of First Lady Yuk Young-soo, he was asked ‘Was it insurrection by Chun Doo-hwan? ’ and answered, “I do not think so.
” He said, “It is hard to readily agree with the categorical labeling of it as insurrection, and further historical evaluation and discussion are needed. ” The insurrection by Chun Doo-hwan has been confirmed as historical fact through a final Supreme Court ruling and years of truth-finding.
Turning it into a subject of historical dispute by riding on the extreme claims of a tiny fringe in our society, out of step with the times, only foments national division. However, in a five-minute speech at the National Assembly plenary session on the 1st, Representative Kim not only failed to apologize, but went a step further.
He asserted, “Former president Kim Dae-jung received a death sentence from the Supreme Court for conspiracy to commit insurrection, but was later acquitted in a retrial,” and argued that former president Park Geun-hye also has ample room to be reevaluated through a retrial.
But equating the ‘Kim Dae-jung insurrection conspiracy case’ fabricated by the new military regime with the state affairs manipulation scandal of former president Park, which the entire nation witnessed and which led to her removal by a unanimous Constitutional Court, is absurd sophistry. Representative Kim also said, “Everyone should be allowed to express opinions about judgments and history.
” Of course, since historical records and rulings are not immutable truths, if new facts are revealed through research, a range of views may be presented from a scholarly perspective. However, the public statements of politicians and public officials who bear the duty of national unity must be held to a clearly different standard.
Denying the history shared by the community without clear grounds can only be seen as an attempt to relativize historical facts for partisan strife. As controversy grew, including the Steering Committee of the National Assembly adopting a resolution urging his expulsion on the 2nd, Representative Kim expressed regret on Facebook.
He said, “I will be more prudent in my expressions going forward. ” However, this is not something to brush aside by invoking ‘misunderstanding’ and expressing regret. Representative Kim should ask himself whether he is fit to represent the people and apologize to the public.
Along with this, the People Power Party should refer him to disciplinary procedures and fulfill its responsibility as a responsible political party that safeguards the democratic order. Previously, the People Power Party failed to properly discipline Representative Lee Jin-sook, who held a National Assembly forum where the claim that the 5·18 Gwangju Democratization Movement was a “disturbance” was made.
