A new work following ‘Honmono,’ which sold 400,000 copies ‘Inbiin,’ a collection of uncanny tales that questions the boundary between human and nonhuman This book includes only ‘author commentary,’ with no blurbs “Many times I lament distortions of history” “Copying newspaper reading as a stylish habit gave me ideas” Next work to be released as a ‘listening novel’ from Park Jung-min’s publishing house Novelist Seong Hae-na.

ⓒPyo Gi-sik ‘A collection of uncanny tales by novelist Seong Hae-na. ’ The recently published story collection can be introduced with this brief description.

It is a new work by Seong Hae-na, who made her name as a next-generation figure in Korean literature with , released last year and selling more than 400,000 copies, and what is more, it is a collection of strange tales. It seems unlikely to escape the attention of young readers who want novels that are fresh yet capture a slice of the times.

We asked in a recent written interview what drew the author into this uncanny world.

‘Inbiin’ refers to an entity that takes human form but is not human, or that ought to be human yet has chosen to cease being so. The book contains nine short stories about such beings. Several works that deal with the remnants of Japanese colonial rule stand out.

The title story, ‘Inbiin,’ addresses the case of an elderly man who took part in Unit 731’s human experimentation. In the first story that opens the book, ‘A Cherry-Wood Desk Five Ja Wide,’ a collaborator’s descendants inherit their forebear’s desk, while ‘The Righteous Offspring of Sodom’ uses a pro-Japanese relic as its motif.

The author said she read the published by the Institute for Korean Historical Issues while writing these stories and still does today.

“I often lament the fact that the foundations so many have defended are being shaken by historical distortions such as the New Right or the Northeast Project, and I wonder whether this is not a problem arising from the lack of proper reckoning.

Rather than compromising with the injustices and issues of the time or merely touching on them in passing, I believe that doggedly digging in and asking questions is a spirit a writer must never abandon. With that intention, I sought materials and read the ‘Biographical Dictionary of Pro-Japanese Collaborators’ as well.

I hope the times change even a little through literature, and that this remains both our wrong answers and our task. ” There are also pieces that ask what a real human is in a society where artificial intelligence replaces people.

‘Amigo’ is the story of a stunt performer displaced by a humanoid robot named Amigo. Unlike 2020, when the first draft of “Amigo” was written, generative AI, including ChatGPT, has now become commonplace. The prospect that humanoid robots will replace human manual labor is also becoming reality.

The author said, “Concerns about disappearing jobs and AI filling those vacancies now seem taken for granted. ChatGPT is the same. When it was first released, resistance was strong, but now not only companies but also individuals use it in daily life.

Once society adapts to something, it becomes easily desensitized and indifferent. am not desensitized, and I am still afraid. ” Some stories appear to draw ideas from the news. The author said, “At first, a friend said they read the morning paper before going to work, so I followed suit.

It began as a stylish affectation, but now it has become a habit,” adding, “Since the start of my career, I have focused on contemporaneity and written about it, so I always keep my senses sharp to read the trends nimbly.

” She mainly reads the culture, society, and international sections, and her favorite is the “column,” saying, “I like how a page where diverse contributors discuss society and phenomena with varied views feels like a healthy public forum. ” The story collection published last year drew attention thanks to actor Park Jung-min’s blurb, “Why watch Netflix?

You can just read the book by Seong Hae-na. ” The new book contains no celebrity blurbs or critics’ notes. Instead, each story ends with an author commentary written by Seong Hae-na herself. The idea to include the author’s own commentary without blurbs came first from the publisher.

She said, “It is an undeniable and grateful fact that ‘Honmono’ became widely known thanks to a wonderful blurb, but I also believe in the power of my own stories. I wanted to show, through narrative and author commentary, that the critical questions I have honed are accumulated within the work.

” She added, “If you read the collection of uncanny tales closely, you may feel that each commentary is closer to a ‘question’ than an ‘answer. ’ I believe readers will add their own interpretations to my message and have a deeper reading experience.

” Her next work, a full-length novel, is scheduled for release this September as part of a ‘listening novel’ series from Muje, the publishing house represented by Park Jung-min. 한글기사 원본
