President Lee Jae Myung, who had previously criticized Starbucks for their 'Tank Day' event, now clarifies and supports the victims during the 'Siren Event' scandal.
President Lee Jae Myung delivers a eulogy at the memorial ceremony marking the 17th anniversary of the death of former President Roh Moo-hyun, held in Bongha Village, Gimhae, South Gyeongsang, on the 23rd.
Yonhap News President Lee Jae Myung, who had criticized Starbucks Korea for its ‘Tank Day’ event, has now brought up the ‘Siren Event’ that Starbucks ran in the past on April 16. Regarding suspicions that the event mocked the Sewol ferry disaster, President Lee took direct aim, saying, “It is simply not something a person wearing a human face could do.
” On the afternoon of the 23rd, President Lee wrote on X, “To launch a Siren event on the Sewol ferry disaster commemoration day . Please, I hope it is not true,” thus making his position clear. Along with his post, President Lee uploaded a screenshot of a Facebook post by Democratic Party lawmaker Jung Jin-uk.
In that post, Jung said, “They used the Siren, who in myth wrecks ships with song, for an April 16 event, the date of the Sewol ferry disaster. The Siren is the figure in the Starbucks logo, but to have done such a thing on April 16 is an atrocious deed that outrages heaven and humankind.
” Screen capture from President Lee Jae Myung on X President Lee wrote, “This is not Ilbe Storage, and yet they say it was an official event by a major corporation. There is nothing more to add.
On the day of remembrance for the Sewol ferry disaster, when the bereaved families were writhing in pain and the public was mired in grief, they launched an event like a coded message that concealed a mockery, insulting the victims and making a fool of the people while taking their own pleasure.
” He continued, “Connecting the dots, it is hard to see their mocking and insulting of the Gwangju Democratization Movement and of martyr Park Jong-chul through the Tank Day event timed to May 18 as an accidental incident,” and added, “In this beast-like conduct of habitually belittling victims of state violence and disasters just to make some money, there will be a popular judgment.
” President Lee concluded, “On reflection, what they are doing seems not the bottom-of-the-barrel antics of cheap peddlers but the immoral acts of vicious hucksters. ” Earlier, on the 18th, Starbucks held a tumbler promotion dubbed ‘Tank Day’ and included the phrase ‘tak on the desk’ in its copy.
Because the event was unveiled to coincide with May 18, a flood of criticism followed that it trivialized the May 18 Democratization Movement and insulted the death-by-torture case of Park Jong-chul. On the 20th, at a Cabinet meeting, President Lee Jae Myung criticized it head-on, saying, “How can one wear a human guise and do that?
” In the wake of the ‘Tank Day’ affair, consumers have been digging through Starbucks past marketing. The ‘Siren Event’ pointed out by lawmaker Jung and President Lee is one of them. 한글기사 원본
