On the 13th, soldiers from the 8146th Brigade of the Air Force were seen setting up the Cheongung-II missile launch site. The Cheongung-II is a mid-to-long-range anti-missile defense system developed to counter the threat of North Korean aircraft and missiles. It was deployed in the UAE in 2022 and successfully intercepted Iranian missiles during the recent Middle East crisis. The Air Force is also strengthening the defense system to counter the threat of multiple missiles and drones simultaneously. The Air Force is also working on developing AI-based systems for air operations and is planning to deploy AI-based emergency target processing systems by 2030. The KF-21, a domestically developed supersonic fighter, is expected to be fully operational by September this year.

’ 지난 13일 오후 경남 사천의 공군 미사일 방어포대에 사이렌과 함께 훈련 상황을 알리는 방송이 울리자 작전동에 대기하고 있던 장병 3명이 뛰어나왔다. 발사반 요원인 이들은 천궁-Ⅱ 발사대로 달려가 ‘전원 공급’ ‘램프 확인’ 등 발사 준비 절차를 각자 한 번씩 총 세 차례 복창했다. 이후 가상의 적 탄도미사일이 교전 범위에 진입하자 발사 명령이 떨어졌다. 발사대 인근 차량에 위치한 교전통제소에서 모의 발사 버튼을 누르자 가상의 적 탄도미사일은 산산조각이 났다.
이들이 요격 미사일을 발사할 수 있는 상태인 최고 단계에 도달하는 데까지 10여분 걸린다고 공군은 설명했다. 천궁-Ⅱ는 북한의 항공기와 탄도미사일 위협에 대응하기 위해 개발된 중거리·중고도 지대공 유도무기체계로 한국형 미사일방어체계(KMD)의 핵심 전력 중 하나다. 2022년 아랍에미리트연합(UAE)으로 수출돼 올해 초 미국의 이란 공격으로 발발한 중동전쟁에 실전 투입됐고 이란의 탄도미사일을 요격하기도 했다. 공군은 탄도미사일, 순항미사일, 무인기 등을 동시에 쏘는 이른바 섞어 쏘기 공격에 대응하기 위한 방어체계도 강화하고 있다고 밝혔다.
이스라엘의 방공망인 아이언돔이 이란의 섞어 쏘기 공격에 뚫린 바 있다. 공군은 항공 작전 등에 인공지능(AI) 기술을 도입하는 것도 추진 중이다. 손석락 공군참모총장은 기자간담회에서 올해 말 ‘AI 기반 한국형 정보수집 관리체계’를 전력화하고, 2030년대 초까지 미국 팔란티어사의 메이븐 스마트 시스템과 유사한 체계인 ‘AI 기반 긴급표적 처리체계’를 구축하겠다고 밝혔다. 그는 ‘2040년대를 목표로 AI 파일럿을 개발하고 더 나아가 무인전투비행대대로의 전환을 준비하고 있다’고 말했다.
공군은 또 국산 초음속 전투기인 KF-21을 올해 9월 전력화할 예정이다. 손 총장은 노후 전투기인 F-5에 대해선 ‘퇴역 일정을 2030년에서 2027년으로 앞당길 것’이라며 ‘내년 말 이전 명예롭게 퇴역하도록 준비하겠다’고 했다
