The Seoul Arts Center will present at its Opera Theater in Seoul from the 22nd to the 26th. Premiered in 1926 at La Scala in Milan, Italy, the work is set in ancient China and tells the story of Princess Turandot and Calaf, a prince of a fallen kingdom.
The ice-cold Princess Turandot declares she will marry the man who solves all three riddles she sets, and suitors who fail lose their lives. Captivated by Turandot, Calaf chooses to take on the challenge despite those around him urging him not to.
Having solved all three, Calaf then proposes to Turandot that he will forfeit his life if she can discover his name by dawn. On the night when the order goes out across the land, “Let no one sleep,” the song Calaf sings, certain of victory, is the famous aria ‘Nessun Dorma’.
At a press conference held on the 10th at the Seoul Arts Center, Baek Seok-jong, who sings Calaf, said, “This role is my signature role. ” He added, “Although it is a demanding role that requires a high tessitura and dramatic expression, it suits my voice well, and there are similarities with Calaf's character, who presses on toward victory and hope.
” Baek continued, “I do not think there could be a more special stage than singing in my homeland in the role I can do best. ” Soprano Eva Pwonka, who portrays Turandot, remarked, “Because of Calaf's figure who advances in spite of death, one could even call the title of this work ‘Calaf's Journey’,” and added, “In that sense, we are all walking in Calaf's shoes.
” She did not see Turandot merely as a cruel, cold princess.

Yonhap News Tenor Kim Young-woo, who shares the role of Calaf with Baek Seok-jong, laughed as he said, “Having played the three ministers Ping, Pang, and Pong many times in European productions, I once thought the title of this opera should be changed to , but once I actually took on Calaf, I felt again that this work truly belongs to Calaf. ” The ending of has long been considered a directorial riddle to solve.
The shifts in the protagonists' emotions and the progression of the narrative can feel abrupt and coercive to today's audiences. For this reason, actual productions have tried various approaches, such as building the emotional transitions of the two leads in advance or newly interpreting the ending.
