The Colombian daily El Espectador reported on the 8th that Ivan Cepeda Castro, the candidate of the ruling left-wing coalition ‘Historic Pact’, is pursuing a campaign promotion strategy that leverages K-culture. Cepeda has been distributing videos with sparkly effects that evoke scenes from K-dramas.
He also produced short-form videos set to Red Velvet’s ‘Happiness’ that feature light sticks and ‘finger heart’ imagery. At campaign events, he sometimes demonstrates the finger heart gesture himself.
This is seen as a strategy to counter Abelardo Dera Esprieya of the Homeland Protection Party, a hard-right candidate who rallied his base in the first round using social media. Dera Esprieya has targeted young voters with AI-generated promotional videos and content themed around the World Cup and influencers.
The two candidates will face off in the presidential runoff on the 21st. Henessis Mesa, the video producer leading Cepeda’s social media promotion strategy, said in a recent interview with the Spanish daily El Pais that the spirit of resistance embedded in K-pop can resonate by aligning with the social and economic realities Colombian youth face.
He said, “ATEEZ’s ‘Guerrilla’ carries a message to tear down the oppression and barriers we face, and BTS’s ‘Baepsae’ criticizes the structures imposed on young people by older generations and the unequal reality of low wages,” adding, “K-pop is, by its nature, deeply connected to social struggle and the delivery of messages. ” The influence of K-culture in South America has been steadily expanding.
K-pop groups such as BTS, Blackpink, Stray Kids, and ATEEZ have already become part of mainstream pop culture, and the popularity of K-dramas has recently been rising.
