First election since the Gaza Strip war·the war with Iran ‘political reckoning’ Recent approval rating at 29%···Outcome watched amid worsening public opinion Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivers a speech on the 12th at the 50th-anniversary ceremony of ‘Operation Yonatan’ held at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, Israel.

UPI Yonhap News Israel will hold a general election on October 27. In the first vote since the Gaza war and the war with Iran, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political fate will be put to the test.

According to the Times of Israel on the 12th , Israel’s Knesset announced in a statement that the general election will be held on October 27. The Knesset’s session ends on the 17th, after which the official campaign begins.

Netanyahu officially announced in June that he would run in the next election. At 76, he is Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, with a cumulative 19 years in office. He served as prime minister from 1996 to 1999, from 2009 to 2021, and from 2022 to the present.

With this election being held, Netanyahu’s coalition has become the first government in 53 years to complete a full four-year term without a separate parliamentary dissolution procedure. Israel’s highly fragmented multiparty system saw 29 parties run in the 2022 election.

Because of the large number of parties, it is effectively impossible for a single party to secure a majority to form a standalone government, so negotiations to form a coalition customarily begin after the vote. However, public opinion of Netanyahu has worsened recently.

According to a recent survey by Hebrew University, his approval rating fell sharply from 40.5% in early March to 29.4% last month. Public sentiment toward the war against Iran is also unfavorable, with 92% of respondents saying Iran won the current war.

Criticism of Netanyahu erupted in earnest as claims of a security failure over Hamas’s October 7, 2023 raid on Israel emerged. Another key factor is the ongoing trial over corruption allegations against Netanyahu.

In 2019, Israeli prosecutors indicted him on charges including bribery, breach of trust, and fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison, according to reports.

AFP noted that key election issues include clashes with Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned Lebanese armed group; conscription of ‘Haredi’ ultra-Orthodox Jews; plans for governing Gaza after the war; and judicial reform. As Netanyahu’s rival, Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yasar Party, is emerging.

Eisenkot officially declared his candidacy last month. In some polls, the Yasar Party is showing higher support than Likud, the right-wing party led by Netanyahu. Eisenkot, a former Israel Defense Forces chief of staff, also served in Netanyahu’s cabinet.

However, he said, “the government has completely failed to achieve any of its objectives in Gaza,” and resigned in June 2024. Yossi Mekelberg, a researcher at the UK think tank Chatham House, told Al Jazeera that “the October election will be the most important since Israel’s founding in 1948. ” 한글기사 원본
